I often get asked what is a Lomi Lomi massage? And I am often not very good at explaining the difference in just one sentence. I too had never heard of it before I embarked on my Certificate IV massage course, only knowing the usual suspects, Swedish, Remedial and Sports massage. And of course Thai massage, which, as a mum with young babies, I would get regularly for a good pummelling.
Lomi Lomi is along the lines of a Swedish massage. It is generally a relaxing massage, with no aim in mind to “fix” a certain problem, but more concerned with moving blood and lymph through the body, opening up any blockages that may be there, blockages you may not even be aware of, and relaxing and softening tired, overused muscles. It’s aim is to relax the body and the mind, and to heal internally, that which needs healing on a deeper, subconscious level.
Just as when you exercise, your muscles involuntarily contract and release to move your limbs, which in turn squeezes the blood and lymph around the body. So too, in a Lomi Lomi massage, the muscles are squeezed and released by the therapist, so you receive many of the benefits of exercise, the pumping of oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, all while resting on the table. What a great workout!
However, along with the physical benefits of stimulating lymph flow, and improving circulation, there are added benefits unlike any other massage I have experienced. A Lomi Lomi massage is given from a loving space. There is a breath that the therapist uses called a 'Heart Breath'. The therapists ‘in’ breath comes from the universe, in through the top of the head, it moves down into heart space, and then the loving energy is breathed ‘out’ through the hands. When in this loving space, you are totally at ease, and as the flow of the massage is long and rhythmic, working the whole side of the body in one glorious movement, it allows you to enter a trance-like state immediately, and hold a meditative space. When I'm receiving a Lomi Lomi Massage I love to take this time to create a vision board for myself in my minds eye. Creating wonderful experiences for myself and my family, and then I send them off into the universe to manifest!
Besides the benefits of circulation, easing muscles, and increasing a sense of well-being, I must make special mention of a deep and restful sleep that comes on the night of receiving a Lomi Lomi massage. I have had many clients mention how wonderfully they have slept after receiving a massage, and I too love that feeling, one I had not felt since before I had children.
I understand that massages are not cheap and there was a long time when they were a luxury I could not afford. But if you can afford them, both financially and with your time, I truly believe that making space in our busy lives to receive a regular massage, with a trusted therapist, gives our body and mind time to just be. And isn’t that what we all are…Human Beings.
